Rest Stop #3: Spain

For the next leg of my trip, I decided to go to Seville because my friend, Joanne, was living there. Probably the biggest highlight of this portion of my trip was that this was a new experience for me. I had never been to Spain, which just seems CRAZY to me because it’s right there and it’s FANTASTIC!

How to Live Your Legacy

There’s a piece where we all think how we should live our legacy is on the big stage, like Marthin Luther King, Jr. and Ghandi. But the reality is, it’s actually how you’re living day to day, the decisions you’re making every day, that lead up to who you’re being in the world, which then rolls up to your legacy.

How to LIVE with More Gratitude

So here’s what I’ve been learning from The Law of Attraction: it’s not about monitoring your every thought to discover if those thoughts are in gratitude, in non-gratitude, or in ungratefulness. It’s not about watchfully (and obsessively) checking where you are on the continuum.

04-How to Live with More Gratitude

If living gratitude is about expanding that gratitude, then it’s also about the upper half of the vortex. Our job then (in order to live more in gratitude) is to expand the positive vortex. There’s (at least) a couple of ways to do that.Read More >>>

Live a Life of Participation

Participation is a life choice. We’ve been talking a lot about decisions in the last few months, but if we’re not choosing the perspective of participation then we are choosing passivity and waiting.

03-Live a Life of Participation-2

So here’s the challenge: Participate. When you might normally (consciously or not) make the choice for inaction, make the choice for action instead.

Truly live your life to the fullest! Participate when you normally wouldn’t. tweety bird

Here are some situations that you might likely say no to. I challenge you to participate and choose yes instead!

  1. When people invite you out and you’re sitting on the fence, say yes.
  2. Deciding between going for a walk and watching TV, choose the action. Go for a walk.
  3. When seeing other people getting involved in the community, choose to join them! As long as it’s something you’re also excited about, don’t wait to see how it turns out for your friend, jump into action!
  4. If a friend invites you to the opera and you don’t know if you like opera, go find out!
  5. If a friend invites you bungee-jumping and you think you might be too chicken for that, go find out!
  6. If a friend invites you to go to Italy and you’re not sure if you’ll enjoy travelling, go find out! (But only after you’ve introduced that friend to me!)
  7. When someone smiles or flirts with you, smile and flirt right back (and this applies to both the married and unmarried, because a little innocent extramarital flirting can bring some fun back into the marriage!) .
  8. When you are at a restaurant and about to order the same old things… pick something different and discover how you feel about something new.
  9. If you are invited to an event where you won’t know anyone, or you don’t know if you will know anyone… say yes to the invitation and meet some new people.

Okay over to you:

What are other situations you should be saying ‘yes’ to? How has saying ‘yes’ impacted your daily life and mood? I’d love to hear from you! Leave a comment below.

Do You Use Your Joy-O-Meter?

So some of us aren’t very in tune with how we’re feeling in a particular moment. Enter my solution… the joy-o-meter! (Don’t worry you already have one…you just might not know it!)

04-Joy-o-meter

The joy-o-meter is a whimsical way I use to gauge how joyful I am in the moment or around a particular situation, and it’s also a great way to use joy as a decision-making tool. Every situation requires joy (or a bit of ), so the joy-o-meter can show you what activities to pursue, which people to spend time with, and which careers to choose.

Is your joy-o-meter working for you? tweety bird

To get using your own joy-o-meter, first notice what are your indicators that you are closer to or further from joy? For me it is all in my voice. If I sound alive, excited, engaged, then my joy-o-meter is running high. If I am sunken, heavy, slow in my speech, if I think I have to do something or it is a “good idea”, then my joy-o-meter is low.

When my joy-o-meter is low, I take it as an indicator that it’s time to re-think that activity or choice. Or I consider that it’s time to change my attitude or perspective about that thing.

Sometimes, it takes a little bit of a snap to get the joy-o-meter back into working order. Use these questions to help you do that:

  1. Where in your life have gotten into the rut of just doing what’s a good idea?

Maybe you’re going to the same place for your date night or even ordering the same food. At work you might be doing the same tasks and never volunteering for the interesting, exciting, or a little bit scary tasks.

  2. What’s it costing you?
  3. Your self-respect? Excitement? Spontaneity? New possibilities?

  4. Where are you choosing joy or fun?
  5. Hint: These are the things that make your heart pound, your eyes twinkle, or put a smile on your face. You know that you’re stretching yourself and you feel anticipation when you’re doing these activities.

  6. How does it affect you? How do you know you’re in the joy and the fun?
  7. Check out . Are you more aware, or tuned in to yourself and your environment? Maybe you’re feeling a buzz, an excitement, an anticipation?

  8. What do you need to do to choose more fun?

Maybe it’s a matter of saying no to the stuff that doesn’t work. Or maybe it’s time to get your joy-o-meter tuned up so you know what’s joyful!

Okay over to you:

When has your joy-o-meter served you? What do you plan to do to trust it more often? I’d love to hear from you! Leave a comment below.

4 Stages to Living a Life of Ease

Raise your hand if you have a lot on your plate.

Good, glad to see I’m not alone there. (You can put your hands down now.)

Women, especially businesswomen, have a really bad habit of over functioning. We take on more, and more, and more until we hit burnout. Even if we don’t hit burnout, we exhaust ourselves by choosing to make things more difficult than they need to be. The inner competitors and perfectionists shine through until we’ve done about a hundred times what was actually necessary. Yes, I’m talking to you.

What we really want is to open ourselves up to ease. tweety bird

4 stages to living a life of ease

I have so many clients come to me and say, “Oh my god, I’ve got so much going on, it’s so intense! I just wanna follow my dreams!” Often part of the reason why people are so exhausted is because they’re not doing tasks that they love, so they’re extra drained. And while we’d all love to just jump off the busy bandwagon and start sailing towards dreams instead, it doesn’t quite work that way.

There are a few stages in between the two and unfortunately, if you skip those ones you’ll lead yourself right into burnout (again).

Stage 1

Recognize that you’re over functioning and ratchet it back. Say no to a whole bunch of stuff. And yes this requires some heavy lifting at first, and often a bit of introspection surfaces as you consider how you got here in the first place. You will need to admit that you’re overwhelmed, overworked and over functioning and then actually take steps to stop that. But it can be done! Read More >>>

How to Promote Greater Connection

How can you live in a way, day in and day out, that promotes greater connection?

If you haven’t already figured it out with my posts on  and  connection, here’s some more on why it’s important to live from this place of connection.

How to promote greater connection

It’s not just about the selfish benefit that comes when we’re feeling closer and tighter and part of something. It actually comes down to the fact that our world needs us to be more connected.

Many of the ills of the world today are instigated by the fact that we don’t see ourselves in other human beings. We don’t trust our IGS (Inner Guidance System) and we don’t realize that we’re part of something bigger. The wars that are raging throughout this world, right now as you read this very sentence, are happening because fundamentally we have lost sight of the fact that we are all one. Killing your enemy in the Middle East is no different than killing your brother or sister or killing yourself. It is born of separation and it leads to separation; but separation is a lie!

On the other hand, we see the fundamental truth of connection in the global reactions when huge catastrophes happen in our world. Such as the recent earthquake in Nepal or tsunamis hitting the shores of Japan in years past. During these times we naturally reach out to help our brothers and sisters and we remember that their misfortune and that our blessings are random and universal. When we see these other peoples’ suffering, we realize that they are us and that they’re no different from us. Read More >>>

3 Strategies to LIVE Everyday with Resilience

Live everyday with resilience, it’s such an important skill for us to have! While I’ve already addressed how to recuperate with resilience and I’ve featured women who demonstrated resilience in fighting for a greater good, today I’m talking about how to LIVE with resilience, everyday.

resilience, live, strategies, everyday

There’s this light on my car’s dashboard that comes on every once in a while. Once I figured out what on earth that light meant I realized my car was telling me it needed some TLC. It needed an oil change.

Wouldn’t it be great if people came with little lights that lit up anytime we needed maintenance?! Little light bulbs to alert us of the mundane and the serious: “Hey, you need sleep!”; “Hey, you need to eat!”; “Hey, go hang out with your friends. You really need it!”

…Because we don’t have little dashboard lights, we need to proactively ensure that our resiliency tanks don’t get too low.  It’s all about being proactive in order to create a life where we’ve got that ability to bounce back.

We know setbacks are going to happen, so we’ve got to be ready for them. tweety bird

(And when they do happen, remember not to beat yourself up over them!)

These three strategies are ways for you to ensure that you’re able to LIVE everyday with resilience: Read More >>>

Stop Hiding Your Passion

4-LiveOver the past month we’ve worked through understanding passion. We addressed the 3 Components of BEing a Passionate Person. You journaled your way through CHOOSING your passions. The last step? LIVE your passion. (Read more on my Signýficant Living framework here, here and here.)

The reality is that most of us have at least one passion that we’ve been hiding from the world. What I’m pushing you towards today is to take the tough step of revealing and really, truly celebrating your passions now; even the ones that you’re a little bit shy about, or dare I say it, ashamed of.

Hopefully through the journaling you did last week you were able to discover what that passion is. Maybe you’re a closet Trekkie and you’ve had a lifelong dream of attending a conference full of other Trekkies just like you. Or maybe you’ve got a grand vision for starting an NGO, but the overwhelming mountainous size of the task has prevented you from admitting this dream to others.

Think through these questions (use this journal guide to help):Read More >>>
