Run For the Cure

Here’s an example of where I choose to participate every year. Run for the Cure happens every year and I’ve been participating in it every year since I was first diagnosed and treated 14 years ago.

04-RUN FOR THE CURE

The year that I first did it I’d just come off my last round of chemo and I was bald as a baby ostrich. But I ran anyway, because I knew that my life depended on me choosing IN. I don’t just mean for the run, but for my life!

I chose yes. I chose to run (and I mean run, every year since then, no matter what shape I am in, cause I figure if I could run after 4 rounds or chemo there is never an excuse to not run) for the cure. I chose getting my friends involved. I chose making it into a bit of a victory dance (even though I wasn’t done cancer treatment yet) because I knew that being a clear and conscious ‘yes’ to life and all it had to offer is what was going to keep me alive.

Whatever your reason, whatever your excuse is for not participating in your life (or in something like Run for the Cure), get over it, get over yourself and go grab your life by the balls.

You only get one chance at this life so make it count. tweety bird

Bring hope to the thousands and thousands of women that get diagnosed with breast cancer every year. How to do that? You can do the run. You can volunteer. You can raise money. You can come out and cheer on the people that are running.

I used to just think Run for the Cure was about raising money to find a cure for breast cancer. But it turns out that the thing that has been most impactful is the inspiration it gives the women who are fighting for their lives. Knowing that someone’s got your back when you’re in that kind of hell storm. Even if it’s not you or someone you love, breast cancer will affect your life, somehow, sometime. So why not take the fight to it, starting now?

Okay over to you:

How will you be participating in Run for the Cure this year? What inspirational stories have you seen coming out of the run? I’d love to hear from you! Leave a comment below.

What Does it Feel Like?

As I do every year … did the Run for the Cure again this last weekend. And while I don’t dig the monetization of cancer, there is plenty that I do dig …

I LOVE that this is an event that is dedicated to ALIVENESS. To supporting, calling forth, even demanding … that people BE FULLY ALIVE, that they choose IN: to life, to activities, to exercise, to supporting those with cancer. What’s not to love about that?

Each year leading up to it I feel meh … like, really, am I going to do this again?

And then each year, when I get down there and I look into the faces of the fighters, the survivors (you can usually tell the difference by their hair length), and the supporters, the people that love someone who is fighting or has fought their way out of cancer’s nasty grip – I am, once again, moved to tears, of joy and gratitude, that we talk about this disease, that we don’t behave like it is something to hide, or something to be ashamed of, or something to face alone.

NO.

This is an amazing 12,000+ community of people that say … you can do it, I know you can, and I will stand along side you as you do. I have got  your back.

That is something I can get behind.

To get a feeling of what it was like … check out this 30 second video of me describing what the experience was like for me.

Become a Part of the Story

This story doesn’t write itself. And just like cancer, I can’t do this all by myself. I have a vision of a world where we all feel less isolated, where we all know that we matter and our lives matter and we are significant. But I need your help.

And there are so many ways that you can do that.

  • From giving of your time, energy or resources
  • To running for someone
  • To being someone we want to run for

All are welcome … so go ahead and find the way that you want give that is meaningful for you. And if you don’t see something that you think needs doing, go ahead and tell me about it, so that we can add it to the list.

A Different Kind of Run

I have been doing the CIBC Run for the Cure since the year I was in cancer treatment, which makes this my 14th year. Mostly now I do it to remember (and prove to myself) I can, and to stay grateful that I am alive.

To be honest, it has lost its heart.

And that makes me sad, because when I first did it, it had such meaning for me. I felt hope, and connection, a part of something bigger than me and that I was not alone in the fight.
