Yes, you can have an awesome Fully Alive life. You may have doubted it up to this point, but trust me, you can have it! In fact, anyone can!
There’s just one teensy-weeny little catch… you have to choose it.
It gets back to my whole Signýficant Living framework: Be, Choose, Live.
At a Crossroads
You know on a Monday morning when that alarm clock goes off and you’re forced to be awake when that is the absolute last thing that you want to do? So you roll over, hit the snooze once, twice… You squeeze all that you can from those last moments of sleep, getting in as many extra zzz’s as you possibly can.
Well, sometimes life is a bit like that too. Things happen that push us to the awake stage right when we least want it. Health concerns, a relationship ending, difficulties at work, a friend pointing out your flaws or maybe a death of someone in your circle. These are all life’s little wake up calls. But then once we’re awake, we have a choice to make: just press snooze again or jump out of bed?
The thing is though, if you don’t choose to get out bed, if you don’t choose Fully Alive, the wake up calls are just going to keep coming after you.
And when you’ve hit snooze enough times, the universe is going to tell you to “get the f@*$ up!”
The universe is going to send you something nasty. Cancer. Divorce. Rehab. Job loss.
So don’t let it get to that! Choose the change while you are still in the drivers seat. Choose Fully Alive after the first wake up call!
Choosing is always that very conscious place where you actually decide for yourself to roll up your sleeves and get to work. There are certain life lessons that we’ve already been committed to and we need to wake up to those before the lessons get more dramatic.
Custom Lessons
As part of the leadership program I did with the Coaches Training Institute 15 years ago, we did a ropes course. (One of those high-ropes courses where you’re tottering on a tightrope in amongst the treetops trying not to glimpse just how far it is to the ground below.) Afterwards when we debriefed about our experiences, every single person had taken a different lesson away from the experience. Each lesson was perfect for where that person was at in their life. Almost like their learning was custom made for them.
And here’s the thing: I think it always is. All of our souls need different lessons. There’s no ‘one size fits all’ lesson to help us get what we need. That’s why it’s so great that the universe is big enough to customize every lesson to give every soul exactly what it needs.
A recent example about how lessons progress… cancer was like a two by four to the back of my head. A very urgent, very demanding, take no prisoners wake up call. This last month, after decades of entirely accident free car ownership, I twice pranged up my car. What?? Super weird. But here’s what is so exciting about that: the universe is clearly trying to get my attention, only now I have progressed to listening better – so it can come in the form of a splinter (as in nobody was hurt, and no one else’s car was damaged) instead of the two by four, and I receive it for what it is – time to wake up.
All that ‘stuff’ (yup, those wake-up calls, both big and small) that happens to us? You guessed it, its just fodder, a set up, the building blocks for the learning that we need to get in this life… Those things that happen “to you” are actually happening for you. Every one of them is an opportunity for learning (if we look at it that way), an opportunity for you to choose whether you go back to sleep or “get the f@*$ up!”.
My opinion? Get up. Choose Fully Alive. Start now.
Okay over to you:
