Lessons From the Ocean

Have you ever just sat and watched the ocean?

Observed the waves rolling in, pondered how far they’ve travelled and how much power they hold?

When we finally stop, and take a moment to be present, to really listen, the world is so abundant.  tweet

Gifts and lessons abound. For most of us though, those moments to stop and absorb the beauty of what’s around us are rare. That’s why when we finally do take that step of committing to quieting our minds and just being present, the lessons we can learn are so much more valuable.

Remember back to before I went on my retreat, A Return to Grace, in Mexico. I struggled even with the seemingly simple act of committing to this event. I spent ages weighing all of the pros and cons, but I made the decision to choose self care over anything else. I chose to take the time to be present.

While I sat watching those waves break on the shores and played in them as they crashed, I started embracing the lessons that the ocean was offering to me. I jumped in and rolled around, I frolicked and played, and I danced with the waves. I let them throw me around and I engaged with them FULLY.  By choosing to be present I was fully living, and the lessons the water provided me proved the value of that.

Is it time to STOP?

Obviously there are plenty of things that we could stand to do less of in a day. What I’m talking about today is stopping the busyness habit. You know what I mean, that compulsion to do more, do better and do it in a way that makes it look easy. In today’s world, we all have it (or so it would seem), and we all seem to just think it’s normal, just the way things are.

Here’s the thing … it’s not serving us. And it’s not like that is news. We all know it, deep down inside, that this is not working. But we keep doing it. Almost like our To Do list and keeping up to date on it, and being on top of our email is the new “keeping up with the Jones’ “. Comparing our inbox count and bemoaning how long our list is has become a point of bonding. And when that happens, our Hyper-Achieving saboteur has stolen the show, and made off with the real prize … our peace of mind.

And I get that we need to do what needs to be done. And if we don’t at least try to stay on top of the inbox that the ambush of emails can paralyse us … but we need to stop.

Maybe not forever, but at the very least … we need a break.

Find Your Crew

I am a BIG believer in playing to your strengths: doing what you do well, sticking with your sweet spot. That alone makes the world better all around (better for us because we are having fun, better for others because if we’re happy and having fun, we’re better people to be around).

Along the same line, I believe we need to be surrounded by the right people. Our crew, our tribe, our soul family. Those people who get us. REALLY get us. Without trying, they find us funny, they see what is amazing about us, they get lit up around us, and we get energized being around them. I cannot overstate the power (and importance) of this. It is where fitting in (what we do with people that are not our crew) turns into belonging (what happens when we are with our tribe, the Ones Who Get Us). Things become effortless. And, not surprisingly, I am a big fan of effortless (goes along with Ease).

Choose Fully Alive

LE_square graphic_Signy Wilson1Tonight (or Oct 21st, if you read this on a different day than I wrote it), I am speaking at Living Extraordinary. I am totally excited to be with a group of amazing speakers, sold out house and the magic that Kate and Conscious Divas creates.

AND.

I am nervous. Which is funny to me, because I love this stuff, and it’s not like I haven’t worked to groups this size, frequently. And it is only 7 minutes … hell, I could fill that just by introducing myself. And still nervous.

Here is what I think is going on. It represents something bigger for me. This night, this act, represents me stepping out into my bigger life. And so the fear is bigger than just speaking (which is fun for me). It is about being seen, it is about letting myself shine, it is about being fully me for all to see. It’s vulnerable and it’s scary shit no matter what. As humans we are wired to not do that, except that doing that is what makes us feel fully alive. It is what reminds us about who we really are, and what makes our hearts pound.

I, for one, have been craving that. As an expert in my chosen field it is so easy to go to sleep at the wheel. To be the sage on the stage, doing what I know. But that is not what I am up to in this life. Like many of you, I am here to stretch myself and grow and try new things. Even when they make me feel like I might barf.

So today, in celebration of breast cancer awareness month, and of being alive, I am choosing FULLY alive. I am choosing to do something that scares me, I am choosing to stretch, and I am choosing to cross the threshold into a new life and a new way of being.

Who wants to join me?

And what does that look like for you?

Please inspire us all by sharing that thing that stretches you, scares you and you know is your next powerful step!!

What Does it Feel Like?

As I do every year … did the Run for the Cure again this last weekend. And while I don’t dig the monetization of cancer, there is plenty that I do dig …

I LOVE that this is an event that is dedicated to ALIVENESS. To supporting, calling forth, even demanding … that people BE FULLY ALIVE, that they choose IN: to life, to activities, to exercise, to supporting those with cancer. What’s not to love about that?

Each year leading up to it I feel meh … like, really, am I going to do this again?

And then each year, when I get down there and I look into the faces of the fighters, the survivors (you can usually tell the difference by their hair length), and the supporters, the people that love someone who is fighting or has fought their way out of cancer’s nasty grip – I am, once again, moved to tears, of joy and gratitude, that we talk about this disease, that we don’t behave like it is something to hide, or something to be ashamed of, or something to face alone.

NO.

This is an amazing 12,000+ community of people that say … you can do it, I know you can, and I will stand along side you as you do. I have got  your back.

That is something I can get behind.

To get a feeling of what it was like … check out this 30 second video of me describing what the experience was like for me.

Why not make it EASY?

easydoesitAs we slide into Libra season… I am reminded that Libra is about beauty and pleasure… and ease. That’s right. Ease.

Letting things be easy.
Easy Does It.
The Law of Least Effort.

All of that and more.

As it turns out I don’t come by “ease” naturally.

In fact, can you believe that I used to tell people that my name was Signý Ann Wilson, with no E’s. It seemed the simplest way to say it. There is no “e” in Signy, and in fact there is no “e” in the way my Ann is spelled, and I thought I was just being clever saying that there is no “e” in Wilson (obviously)… but say it out loud… no E’s. No Ease.

So yes, ironically ease is hard for me.

I usually pick the rougher road, both because I like to stretch and challenge myself (a Good Thing), but also because I think that “easy” means I am not giving it my all (not such a good thing, in case that wasn’t obvious). I choose the things that are hard, and then I also see what is hard about them, and everything else for that matter.

I am not saying all this by way of recommendation. In fact the opposite. So much so that I will be dedicating this Libra season to the cultivation, nay even gentler, the nurturing of EASE.

Big exhale.

That’s right. When faced with decisions, I will pick the easier path. Or the fun-er path. Same, same. I will see which way the world points me (as determined by what is least effort), and I will go there willingly, even joyfully.

Seems easy enough, right? Yet, somehow I doubt it. With all the rewiring of my neuropathways required for this… it will be an adventure for sure. And I will share what I learn, both from my experience, but also about what research I do around it. What tips I unearth. What quotes or articles I discover. All in an attempt to inspire more ease everywhere.

Speaking of that… the first thing I am throwing on the pyre of ease… is my run for the cure project. It is still so dear to my heart, and maybe it will happen for next year, or in some different iteration, but here is what I noticed… it was not flowing, it was not easy and it was also coming at a time when I have rather a whole bunch of other stuff on the go… So, for the same of my sanity and also as an act of trust in the universal flow and mind… I relinquish it, along with all of the struggle and trying hard.

So I have started the divestment… with my offering… what thing or decision or action that is not flowing easily will you give up, let go of, release?
