What events led up to you deciding to take back your life?

I was doing the kind of work that was meaningful but I wasn’t doing it in the environment or with the audience where I knew I could have the greatest impact and show up as my most authentic self. I kinda felt stuck and the quiet voice inside of me was whispering saying; “slow down, there’s something else for you…” So, I choose to not take on any new contracts for a period of time, do some deep self-healing work and reflection and listen to the quiet voice…

What events led up to you deciding to take back your life?

I was in a relationship that was pretty good – good enough to have lasted ten years. We loved each other. We rarely argued. We had a comfortable life and we’d bought a home together.

But.

(You knew there was going to be a “but,” right?)

But… if we rarely argued, I suspected it was because we so rarely touched the depths of what we were feeling. I spent months trying to forge a deeper connection.

Take Back Your Life: Theresa “Tree” Walsh

Tree

Theresa “Tree” Walsh is a Community Engaged Arts Facilitator and Teacher who uses dance, education and other arts based practices, to help create a space for people to explore themselves through questions and issues that are meaningful for them. Her big picture plan is to build an arts based personal growth and development centre called myTREEHOUSEvision which would help youth learn lead and mentor each other, create collaborative compositions together, and learn a variety of other arts based practice skills.

She has worked in many contexts such as summer camps, schools, community centres, community events, etc across North America in order to try to make the world a better place in whatever way she can.

The world isn’t flat, the sun doesn’t revolve around the Earth and there are many things we believe now that are like those beliefs were to people who believed them in the past – Tree is out to help the world, herself included, to discover and evolve these limiting beliefs so we can save ourselves from self-destruction!

What events led up to you deciding to take back your life?

I was living in my home city of Toronto, and only living my dream in the summers at a camp in New Hampshire US as the Dance and Fitness Program Director. Life was great in the summers, where I felt like for the first time ever I got to be my true self, and finally felt ok to be me. I got to dance with kids, work with my staff to help them learn and grow as teachers and leaders, and be the kind of person I really wanted to be… then I would go out into the rest of the year, struggling to enjoy life and to really feel fulfilled or living my passion.

What events led up to you deciding to take back your life?

My dad passed away very suddenly (and unexpectedly) 7 weeks after getting the ‘all clear’ sign from his doctor that his cancer was gone…

Was there a significant event or moment that made you realize you needed to make a change? What was it?

Yes. I realized how important it was to take care of myself and my body. I had been putting myself on the back burner for years putting the kids, my husband, my extended family, friends, the house, to dos, work, etc… as so much more important than ME taking care of MYSELF.

When my dad passed away, I realized that if I didn’t take care of myself I may not get the full life I truly desired AND that by NOT taking care of myself I was actually more selfish than taking an hour here or there.

(I miss my dad terribly and I want to have as much healthy and fully alive time as possible.)

What events led up to you deciding to take back your life?

Before I was diagnosed with cancer (not that I would have known this was the case at that time) my life was feeling empty, meaningless and purposeless. I wanted something different, but I didn’t know what that was, so I couldn’t pursue it. I was just waiting. Waiting to find out, waiting for life to happen, waiting for something, anything to make it more meaningful and put it on the “right” track. I was abdicating my power to CHOOSE my own life. I wasn’t bringing all of me to life and I wasn’t expressing the truth of who I was.

Take Back Your Life Month

Last year, I declared May 16th ‘Take Back Your Life’ Day, because that’s the day that I took back my life from that evil beast, Cancer. It’s so important to me that this year I’m declaring the whole month of May ‘Take Back Your Life’. (Or in the more hip and with-it format: #TakeBackYourLife.)

Along with April’s theme of Fully Alive we’ve talked a lot about life’s wake up calls coming our way and being forced to choose to make a change in your life. The reality is that these little wake up calls are not only forcing us to choose Fully Alive, they are waking us up to what is important. Like, really, really important.

We don’t have forever, but we do have NOW. And there are two things that that makes me think of. One is making NOW count, not frittering it away doing things that are important only to other people, doing things that aren’t true to us or our hearts – that aren’t how we would live if we only had one more day, one more week, one more month or one more year left.

3 Steps to Unlock a Fully Alive Life Immediately

Some of life’s wake up calls have come your way and you’re now standing at a crossroads. Choose Fully Alive and embrace a life of risks? Or continue on the route you’re on?

The choice is yours, but of course I’m biased and really think that you should choose Fully Alive, starting NOW.

alive, fully, self-help, change,

Good. Glad you made the right choice. But what to do to really unlock and start living that Fully Alive life?

How to Have an Awesome Life by CHOOSING Fully Alive

Yes, you can have an awesome Fully Alive life. You may have doubted it up to this point, but trust me, you can have it! In fact, anyone can!

There’s just one teensy-weeny little catch… you have to choose it.

choose, fully alive, awesome, life, fulfilled, satisfied, self-help

It gets back to my whole Signýficant Living framework: Be, Choose, Live.

At a Crossroads

You know on a Monday morning when that alarm clock goes off and you’re forced to be awake when that is the absolute last thing that you want to do? So you roll over, hit the snooze once, twice… You squeeze all that you can from those last moments of sleep, getting in as many extra zzz’s as you possibly can.

Well, sometimes life is a bit like that too. Things happen that push us to the awake stage right when we least want it. Health concerns, a relationship ending, difficulties at work, a friend pointing out your flaws or maybe a death of someone in your circle. These are all life’s little wake up calls. But then once we’re awake, we have a choice to make: just press snooze again or jump out of bed? Read More >>>

What Will Make You Actually BE Fully Alive?

Fully Alive, it’s like the entirety of my message got bundled up into two punchy little words. Fully. Alive. Such powerful words, singularly and then together…and an even better life choice. So what is it and what will makes you actually be a Fully Alive person?

What Will Make You Actually BE Fully Alive-

Just hold tight while I overload you with metaphors.

So many of us are just living a half-life. It’s like we’re on auto-pilot. We’re calling it in. We’re not really paying attention, just being carried along in the current. We’re coasting. (Did you get them all? I count 5! Metaphor speech is now over. Thank you for rolling with me.)

While this is all well and good and anyone can get through life like this, where the hell is the fun?! There isn’t any spark; there isn’t any deep engagement. What a waste!

3 Strategies to LIVE Everyday with Resilience

Live everyday with resilience, it’s such an important skill for us to have! While I’ve already addressed how to recuperate with resilience and I’ve featured women who demonstrated resilience in fighting for a greater good, today I’m talking about how to LIVE with resilience, everyday.

resilience, live, strategies, everyday

There’s this light on my car’s dashboard that comes on every once in a while. Once I figured out what on earth that light meant I realized my car was telling me it needed some TLC. It needed an oil change.

Wouldn’t it be great if people came with little lights that lit up anytime we needed maintenance?! Little light bulbs to alert us of the mundane and the serious: “Hey, you need sleep!”; “Hey, you need to eat!”; “Hey, go hang out with your friends. You really need it!”

…Because we don’t have little dashboard lights, we need to proactively ensure that our resiliency tanks don’t get too low.  It’s all about being proactive in order to create a life where we’ve got that ability to bounce back.

We know setbacks are going to happen, so we’ve got to be ready for them. tweety bird

(And when they do happen, remember not to beat yourself up over them!)

These three strategies are ways for you to ensure that you’re able to LIVE everyday with resilience: Read More >>>
